Bioinformatics II (BIOI 7712) Bioinformatics II is the second course in the core curriculum of the graduate program in Computational Bioscience (CBP). It is composed of two parts, a computational methods and practice component and a research planning and communication component. This team-taught course is primarily for CPB graduate students, but open to any UCDenver graduate or medical student. Computational Methods: The objective of this part of the course is to train students on independently conducting computational investigations on molecular biological problems. This will be accomplished by emphasizing biological analysis, algorithm design and implementation of software for sequence and structure analysis. Biological problems and their computational solution strategies will be presented in lectures. Students will implement programs to solve three problems, make a brief presentation and write a report. Goals: To enable students to design and implement computational algorithms to solve biological problems and communicate those results. Research Planning and Communication: This part of the course looks at research planning and communication in computational biology. Students will become familiar with the requirements for productive research in computational biology. They will be able to define, execute and report on a significant and achievable computational biology research project, as well as present and evaluate the computational biology research projects of others. Goals: To help advanced students make the transition to beginning researchers and gain experience with producing and evaluating academic communication (e.g., grant proposals, conference posters, and journal articles).
